How we calculate
From net: VAT = net × rate, gross = net + VAT. From gross: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate), VAT = gross − net. Amounts are rounded to cents per line.
The rates come from the European Commission’s VAT rates overview and the national tax authorities; each country shows the source and the date the rate applies from. Which rate applies to a product or service is set by national law.

Questions
- Which rate applies to my product?
- The country’s law decides. The calculator lists the standard and reduced rates; check the category with your tax authority or adviser.
- How do I take VAT out of a price?
- Choose “amount includes VAT”. The net amount is the price divided by 1 + rate — not the price minus the rate percentage.
- Why is my invoice off by a cent?
- Some invoices round VAT per line, others on the total. This calculator rounds per line.
