How we count

Fixed-date holidays come from each country's law; movable ones are counted from Easter Sunday (Orthodox Easter for Greece and Romania), or by rules such as “the last Monday of May”.

Where the law moves a holiday that falls on a weekend to a weekday (United Kingdom, United States, Japan), the moved day off is shown as well.

Long weekends are runs of three or more days off. A bridge is a working day you take as leave to join a holiday with the weekend; we show options with up to two days of leave that give at least two days off for each day taken.

Questions

Are all holidays days off?
Not always. Some countries have official holidays that are working days — they are marked in the list. Regional holidays apply only where the region has them.
What is a bridge day?
A working day between a holiday and the weekend. Taking it as leave turns, for example, a Thursday holiday into four days off.
Is the list official?
It is worked out from the law, linked below. Governments sometimes add one-off days off — check the official source for your employer's rules.
